Postcards
from the box
Are you looking for a little mystery this summer?
More than ten years ago, I wandered into an antique store and came home with an old wooden Mendelâs chocolate box.
Inside were dozens of handwritten postcards, some dating as far back as 1906.
Every few years, Iâd open the box, read a handful, then close it again.
What stopped me wasnât lack of interest. It was the feeling that there was a story here, and once I started, Iâd want to know more about the people who wrote them.
Most of the postcards were exchanged between people living in Vancouver and Ladner, B.C., along with a few other places in Canada and the United States.
This summer, Iâm finally opening the box for good, and Iâd love your help following the trail.
Every week, weâll read another postcard together and slowly uncover the stories behind themâtheir friendships, illnesses, Christmas greetings, potato harvests, train journeys, and ordinary days that somehow survived more than a hundred years.
I have no idea where this story is going. Thatâs the best part.
Curious? Next week, weâll begin with the first postcard.

I have a book of postcards my Grandparents sent to us whilst travelling around Australia. My Grandfather wasnât good at talking photos so they bought postcards instead, the few photos we have that he took are not quite right but fun to look at with the postcards. Have fun reading
This will be really fun! Canât wait!
